Getting your teaching business ready for September

September is just around the corner, bringing a fresh wave of energy, new students, and the perfect opportunity to start the academic year feeling organised and confident. It’s a great moment to review your teaching approach, refresh your lesson ideas, and set exciting goals. But while it’s tempting to focus only on your methodology and materials, don’t forget to give some attention to the business side of your work too. A little bit of planning now can make the year ahead smoother, more enjoyable, and far less stressful.

Here are some ideas to help you get set up for success this September and beyond.

Know your ideal students (and those you’d rather avoid)

You probably have a clear picture of the types of classes you’d most enjoy teaching, whether that’s business English, exam preparation, or conversation practice with adult learners. But have you also thought about the kinds of students or situations that don’t suit you? For example, maybe you’d rather avoid learners who regularly skip homework, constantly reschedule, or challenge your teaching style in unhelpful ways. Knowing this from the start can save you time and energy later. The clearer you are on who you do and don’t want to teach, the easier it will be to fill your timetable with students who are a good fit.

Set your rates and stick to them

Deciding on your rates is more than just picking a number for a 60-minute lesson. You also need to consider the time you spend preparing, following up, and doing admin. Think about your ideal weekly income and how many hours you’d like to work, then divide one by the other to find a fair rate that values both your teaching and preparation time. Once you’ve set your rate, be confident about it. Charging what your work is worth helps you sustain your teaching long-term.

Group your students wisely

If you have enough students with similar needs, think about bringing them together for group lessons. Learning alongside others can be motivating and fun, and it gives students a chance to practise language in a more natural way. Group classes can also help you make the most of your time while creating a lively, supportive atmosphere. Try matching students who are at a similar level and share common goals or interests. It can make lessons more engaging for everyone involved.

Get a contract to avoid cancellations and confusion

A clear, friendly contract can prevent a lot of misunderstandings later. Here are some things to consider:

  • Cancellations: decide how much notice you’ll need if a student can’t make a lesson, and whether late cancellations will still be charged.

  • Scheduling: will you offer fixed lesson times or allow rescheduling? You might also keep a regular “admin” day for catching up on emails, prep, or make-up lessons.

  • Payments: Decide how and when payments will be made - weekly, monthly, or per lesson, and keep a simple record so both you and your students can track what’s been paid.

Set boundaries

It’s easy to let teaching take over your calendar, especially when you enjoy what you do. But to keep your energy and creativity high, you need clear boundaries. Decide in advance when you’re not working, whether that’s evenings, weekends, or certain weekdays. And block that time in your diary. Plan your holidays just as you would lessons, and let students know early so they can prepare. Boundaries also include how and when you respond to messages: you don’t need to be “on call” 24/7. Protecting your personal time is one of the best ways to keep your teaching sustainable and enjoyable.

Running your own English teaching business is about more than great lesson plans. It’s also about creating a work life that feels balanced and rewarding. By being clear about the students you want to work with, valuing your time through fair rates, grouping students thoughtfully, setting clear expectations with a contract, and protecting your time with healthy boundaries, you’ll be setting yourself up for a smoother and more enjoyable year.

Here’s to building a teaching practice that thrives while leaving you with the time and energy to enjoy life beyond the classroom!
